On March 2, I
opened my solo exhibition "Irreversible Abstraction" in "Apo'strophe
Sala de Arte" in Vigo, curated by Elena Bangueses. You can visit it until the 24th of March.
"...The myth of feminine
fragility and passivity is negated by Nurias` bold and confident gestures.
Nuria has constructed a visual vocabulary borrowing aesthetics from abstraction
and action painting as well as calligraphy but the message she is communicating
seems to be a personal one. She puts herself in the center of her own frame
physically and mentally and then almost obsessively acts in and out of that
frame, until it becomes the backdrop to the registry of her activity rather
than its container...At the same time, it is hard not to see the work as a system with its
own rules and subsystems within which the artist allows herself to explore and
explode. The choice of paper, conscious or not, as the base material seems
inherited from the act of writing, which in its automatic form is also nothing
else than the pouring of one´s internal experience onto a surface laid flat
using a system of marks. The contrast between the heavy use of paint and the
inherent nature of paper achieves out a tense fragility from what at first
looks like a robust often even brutal visual language...The images she produces
are partly under her conscious control but what makes this kind of abstraction
so unique it's the non existing margins of error. The paint is picked from the
pallet and the mind sends the hand out to meet the painting’s surface with
little deliberation, and by the time the artist sees the mark on the paper
there is nothing to be done about it. In this type of irreversible abstraction
time can only go one way, no one can turn it back to make corrections, and this
takes absolute commitment".
